NHK Reported Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Festival

As autumn breeze blew, 2021 China (Suzhou) Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Festival kicked off in Suzhou Yangcheng Lake Ecological Tourism Resort Zone. NHK Shanghai Branch filmed the festival live.


Being a hallmark of Suzhou cuisine, Yangcheng Lake hairy crab enjoys a great popularity at home and abroad. According to the data provided by Suzhou Hairy Crab Association at the opening ceremony of the festival, the production of the hairy crab this year is expected to reach 10940 tons.


According to Yangcheng Lake Crabs Association, this year’s crab harvest is estimated to increase by about 600 tons compared to last year, both the production and quality of the hairy crabs have been greatly enhanced in recent years thanks to the ecological, standardized, science-based breeding model and the intelligent quality management platform. It is worth mentioning the opening ceremony of this year's festival went online with no audience on site. The first haul of crabs caught was sold online via live streaming. In fact, crabs were ordered even before the crab festival and the trade volume of high-quality crabs grew by 35% year-on-year, as reported by NHK.
